This course will appeal to anyone with a love of plants and the natural world, as well as those with a fascination for detail and precision. It is designed for both beginners and those with more experience who wish to build on their existing skills. Composition and accurate drawing techniques will be taught, and you will be shown how to use a variety of media.

The items you will need to bring with you are listed below. The tutor will have brushes and HP water colour paper which may be purchased if needed.

We do not have the facilities to take card payments in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

  • rubber
  • pencil sharpener
  • A4 sketch book
  • tracing paper
  • kitchen paper
  • water colours
  • brushes, size 6 and 1
  • water colour paper 
  • small seasonal plant or flower, fruit or leaves

Tutor Profile

Valerie Price has worked as a freelance botanical illustrator since gaining a degree in Scientific Illustration. Her work has been commissioned by such publishers as the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, the Royal Horticultural Society, Collins and Dorling Kindersley. She has taken part in exhibitions in the UK and America. Valerie is an experienced botanical illustration tutor and author of the book Botanical Illustration: The First Ten Lessons. Her work is available for commission.

Timings & Refreshments

Coffee is available from 9.45am. The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with biscuits in the morning, a sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon.
