Calligraphy for Christmas
Course Date: Friday 24th November 2017
Category: Calligraphy & Lettering Arts
Tutor: Mary Noble
Price: £80

Summary

Pen your own personalised cards, labels, place cards and small boxes and make this Christmas particularly special. Calligraphy and festive pen patterns can be combined to great decorative effect. The calligraphy skills you learn for Christmas will continue to be useful for occasions throughout the year. Tutor and professional calligrapher, Mary Noble, has many books to her name and has taught for more than 20 years.

Further Detail

We will begin by studying the Uncial script. This is a useful quick-to-acquire first script because it doesn’t have separate capitals and lower case. It is based on a script from the 6th century, when lower case hadn’t yet been invented! This leaves plenty of time to apply your calligraphy and festive pen patterns to name labels or table cards, messages on little boxes and tree decorations or novelties. Take home lots of small items individually personalised as gifts for your friends or family. Ideal for beginners or those with ‘rusty’ skills.

Skills/Techniques Covered

  • using broad-edged calligraphy dip pens of different sizes
  • understanding the need for a constant pen angle
  • writing the Uncial hand, learned in shape groups so as to maintain & appreciate the ‘matching set’ principle
  • using pen patterns as festive decorative effects and as a means to developing a rhythm in writing
  • applying the Uncial hand and pen patterns to small card and paper items
  • folding and cutting card safely and with regard to grain direction
