Learn from professional printmaker, Laura Boswell, how to create vibrant multi-coloured linocuts without a printing press. Explore designing, cutting and inking techniques with plenty of opportunity to experiment. Full instructions will be given on how to repeat the process at home, including how to make a registration device. The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with more experience.

Wood Block Engraving

Wood engraving produces prints of great detail and refinement, with a large tonal range, unlike the more common method of creating woodcuts. This two-day course will introduce beginners to all the basic tools and techniques of wood engraving. Reference books, a set of tools for each student, end-grain practice blocks, a block of lemonwood, Japanese paper, roller and ink will be provided. Printing will be by hand burnishing; a method that can be easily replicated at home.

Explore the properties of ordinary printed paper while learning a new technique to produce attractive and tactile books. When screwed up many times, magazine pages become pliable and almost fabric-like, enabling them to be manipulated into a stylish material that you will use to create the cover of a designer book. Learn the ancient skill of Japanese watercolour woodblock printing. The tutor was selected for two residencies in Japan, where she studied this traditional method under Japanese masters. This beautifully subtle and painterly technique is ideal for those wishing to print at home without a press. The course is aimed at everyone, from beginners to printmakers wanting to learn this little-known technique.
