Hand Woven Rush Mats

Rush matting has been a traditional form of floor covering for centuries. During this one-day workshop, each participant will have the opportunity to recreate their own small mat using tradition plaiting methods and locally harvested bulrush.

Weave your own bag using the indigenous freshwater bulrush (Scirpus Lacustris) which is harvested locally. Working onto a wooden block, you will use this wonderfully supple material and a technique known as ‘flat work’ to create a unique bag to use and enjoy. The bag will be rectangular with two shoulder straps.

Using the wonderfully supple common bulrush with its attractive, subtle colour variations, each participant will make their own storage basket using a variety of weaving techniques. Create something beautiful and useful, to use and cherish.

Weave your own made-to-measure rush hat, using the indigenous common bulrush, Scirpus Lacustris, harvested locally. The tutor, Rachel Frost, makes and supplies hats to museums, theatre companies and re-enactors worldwide. Customers include The Globe, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and Edwardian Farm.
