Glass Fusing – Five Projects in Glass

This course is an introduction to the skills and techniques involved in glass fusing and slumping. We will make five items during the two days – glass jewellery fused in a microwave and two kiln-fired pieces (a bowl/platter and either coasters, a mirror frame or a wind chime). You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of ideas and glass materials.

Fruit in Pastel - Still Life

The bright colours and variety of shapes of fruit lend themselves perfectly to painting in pastel. We will explore techniques including blocking in and layering on the way to you producing your own still life.

Wood Block Engraving

Wood engraving produces prints of great detail and refinement, with a large tonal range, unlike the more common method of creating woodcuts. This two-day course will introduce beginners to all the basic tools and techniques of wood engraving. Reference books, a set of tools for each student, end-grain practice blocks, a block of lemonwood, Japanese paper, roller and ink will be provided. Printing will be by hand burnishing; a method that can be easily replicated at home.

Book Art – Paper Transformation

Explore the properties of ordinary printed paper while learning a new technique to produce attractive and tactile books. When screwed up many times, magazine pages become pliable and almost fabric-like, enabling them to be manipulated into a stylish material that you will use to create the cover of a designer book. Your book will be completed with hand-painted pages.

Herbaceous Border in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Creating a beautiful herbaceous border, brimming with summer blooms using silk ribbons and embroidery threads. Draw inspiration from samples, pictures and photographs as well as tutor demonstrations. Each step and stitch will be demonstrated and there will be group discussions on design ideas. This course is for beginners as well as the more experienced embroiderer.
