A course designed for those interested in developing mixed media and stitch techniques. Taking inspiration from colours and textures in the lay of the land, work with a free and painterly approach to create unique pieces of work using a combination of collage with painting, stitch drawing and texture.

Explore collage and painterly techniques in a loose abstract approach to compose and create layered surfaces on cloth inspired by personal images of textures found in geographical terrain. Experiment with techniques to incorporate line and texture on to layered cloth surfaces, using colour with stitch to add further subtle layers. Develop stitched drawing skills through free machine stitch emphasising line and texture found within the lay of the land. Enjoy a free approach to stitch to add definition to paper and fabric surfaces, experimenting with colour and weight of threads to create dynamic interest within the samples.

Materials are not included in your course fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £6, payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

We do not have the facilities to take card payments in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

Please bring with you:

inspirational images of terrain (land relief), photographs or sketchbook material.

a selection of brushes for use with acrylic paint and dye based colour

apron or overall, please wear suitable clothing. 

sewing machine with drop feed and darning foot/embroidery foot

a range of threads for use in machine work; a selection of colours and weights would be useful, including heavier threads which can be wound on the bobbin.

basic sewing kit, scissors pins etc.

sketchbook/ notebook pencil/pen for notes and ideas

Tutor Profile

Amanda Hislop has a degree in Woven Textiles and a passion for colour, texture and pattern. She has developed a way of working using threads to draw images and integrate texture into the surface of fabric and paper.

Amanda has a PGCE in visual arts and 20 years’ experience of teaching art and textiles in the independent sector. She now focuses on her own textile practice, exhibiting her work and running workshops. As a member of Oxfordshire Craft Guild and Prism textile exhibiting group, Amanda has exhibited work at the Mall Galleries, London, and venues in Oxfordshire. Her work is in private collections in the UK and abroad, and her piece ‘Waves Wash Ashore’ was selected as winner of the Oxfordshire Craft Guild Fletcher Prize and is now part of the Oxfordshire Collection of Contemporary Craft. She is also a member of the Oxfordshire branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild.

Timings & Refreshments

Coffee is available from 9.45am. The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with biscuits in the morning, a sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon.
