Silver clay is silver that is soft and pliable. It can easily be shaped into beautiful jewellery using just your fingers and a few simple tools. Guided by a jeweller who has designed for Tiffany, you will make two or three pieces of jewellery which will be ready to wear by the end of the course.

Silver clay is an amazing new form of silver that can be shaped with your fingers like clay. You will learn the basic techniques of how to roll, cut, texture and finish this precious metal clay.

By the end of the course, you will have designed and created two or three finished pieces of real silver jewellery, such as a pendant and earrings or two necklaces and a brooch. You will also have gained the skills and confidence to continue creating designs in silver clay on your own at home. No previous experience is necessary.

  • how to plan simple designs
  • how to roll, texture and impress patterns and designs
  • how to fire silver clay at home
  • how to finish and polish
  • tips for working with and storing silver clay


Beginner to Intermediate


Materials are not included in your course fee. This is because the amounts used vary from person to person, depending on the project(s) completed.

All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £35.

Please note that we do not have the facilities to take card payments in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

Please bring with you:

  • glasses if needed for close work
  • a notebook and pen if you wish to take notes
  • an apron can be useful but is not essential

Tutor Profile

Designer-maker, jewellery artist, author and experienced tutor, Melanie Blaikie has enjoyed a fascinating career in the world of jewellery. She started her career as a diamond valuer with DeBeers, London, and went on to design for Asprey, Garrad and Tiffany. 

Melanie discovered silver clay in 2002 and is now committed to sharing her knowledge with others, especially beginners. She is the author of two books; Silver Clay Workshop and Rings.

Timings & Refreshments

Coffee is available from 9.45am. The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with biscuits in the morning, a sandwich lunch and cake in the afternoon.
