Summary

In this workshop you will explore abstract calligraphy with expressive form and will work through a set of exercises creating abstract letterform with different mark-making tools (one of which you'll make yourself). This is a pressure-free zone - no rules and no rights or wrongs

You don’t need any calligraphic experience as this isn’t a workshop that relies on straight lines, neat handwriting or legibility. Also suitable for people with experience in the lettering arts that wish to 'free-up' their style. You will come away with a series of inspirational samples as a reference for future work

  • Exploring gestural techniques
  • Use of unusual tools (eg Ruling Pen, Balsa Stick, Moustache Comb etc)
  • Explore abstract mark making
  • Use of inks and their reaction to water
  • Creating abstract backgrounds

Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £5.00, payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

Please bring with you:

  • HB Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Kitchen Roll
  • Scissors
  • Masking Tape
  • Empty Fizzy Drinks Can (rinsed out please).

You are more than welcome to bring your own pens, papers and inks to experiment with.

Tutor Profile

Simon Sonsino is a calligrapher, textual artist and author with over 20 years’ experience, who specialises in abstract expressionist art using calligraphy and all aspects of letterform. His book Textual Art (2015) is now on its 3rd print run and reached #6 in the Amazon Best Seller list for its category. Textual Art highlights just one aspect of his creative output. He also produces commercial work including hand-painted stationery and illustrated books under the name Art Ink. He has studied with world-renowned calligraphers including Gaynor Goffe, Peter Thornton, Tom Perkins, Yukimi Annand, Satwinder Sehmi and Gemma Black. He also works alongside local artists to help introduce letterform into their chosen medium, such as textiles and clay. Because of his unique style and approach, Simon is regularly called on as a demonstrator and workshop leader throughout the UK, notably for the largest arts festival of its kind in Europe: Art In Action (2015 & 2016).

Timings & Refreshments

The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm. Complimentary fresh ground coffee and a range of teas are provided all day, along with homemade cookies in the morning, a sandwich lunch and homemade cake in the afternoon. As peoples’ allergies, intolerance's, special diets and preferences are so many and varied, we are not able to cater for these. However, we will be able to cater for a gluten free diet so please tell us on arrival if you need a gluten free option.
